_No One Understands Sustainability_
Sustainability..... What is it?
This phrase... a commonly asked question when you say your in a master's degree program in Sustainable Systems. People tend to just not know what your talking about. Then you say the word green or renewable energy and they are either very pessimistic or optimistic about the whole idea. Now, I hail from the heart of the Alleghenies, stated on what seems like thousands of signs entering Warren County, Pa, and have come to understand, people from that region either don't care or don't have the money to care about sustainable issues. Reason one being that their is no large interstate nearby and coming to and from warren is on all back roads in some peoples standards. This leads to lack of tourism, lack of industry because of sustainability, and a loss of jobs to overseas. This lack of interstate is causing issues with warrens city council though. They want accessibility for Warrenites and the unique attractions such as oil wells, logging roads, and biker bars.
I will not name names but their are crazy people there also. You may remember the legend Bucky Philips, the New York man who escaped from jail, shot cops, hid in the woods, and escaped bonnie and clyde style. After 6 months on the loose he was arrested, ten miles from Warren, PA. His lifestyle was obviously unsustainable.
Anyways. The reason I'm on this topic is because we had a discussion in class yesterday about sustainability and what it is? The "dirt water fox" Douglas Chad fette brought up the question to our professor. What do you think Sustainability Is? and he had no clue so he asked us, 19 sustainability students, what it is. Well, this lead into a great discussion because we all have a common definition between ourselves but never do we get insight from academics or others out of our area of study. and as commonly represented... the others had no clue. Another strange tangent that Wayne initialized was the story of the Luddites. I'd never heard of these strange folk. They supposedly use no technology . Well I looked into this shit on wikipedia and boom. They were an official group in England in the early 1800's who did not welcome the incoming revolution of mechanized equipment which would've been taking their jobs. They burned factories, mills, and even clashed with the British Army at one point. Presently Luddites are an unknown faction in the real world who do not rely on technology at all. Examples: Amish people. Again, excellent conversation and class discussion. Well, we got our groups in class today also. Me, Cole, and Wayne working on the project. With Wayne's free food antics and Cole's time management. we should be good.
